What "Adoption Protection" is and why it targets the LGBTQ

Kansas has recently passed a bill that sets up ‘adoption protection’ for faith-based adoption agencies, and this targets the LGBTQ community.

With the bill’s passage in the Kansas House and Senate, it is currently pending for signature by the governor.

So what does this bill do and what does it mean for us?

2020 Census to identify same-sex couples

It looks like counting the LGBTQ community is back on track for the 2020 Census despite earlier fears that the Trump Administration would remove the LGBTQ from the census.

This was the declaration made by the US Census Bureau in its report to Congress, i.e. that the 2020 census will ask couples living together to define their relationship to their partners as “same-sex” or “opposite-sex.”

Queer actresses Lena Waithe, Samira Wiley take the spotlight

Queer actresses Lena Waithe and Samira Wiley made the LGBTQ community proud this past few days as they walked the red carpet at two events: the Met Gala and the GLAAD Awards, respectively.

Both events were held in New York City, and both Waithe and Wiley bore the LGBTQ flag triumphantly– well, one literally while the other symbolically.

Sex Ed You Won’t Get In School

Since April 2013, queer artist Erika Moen and her husband, Matthew Nolan, have been publishing the weekly sex-education web comic Oh Joy Sex Toy (OhJoySexToy.com). As the name suggests — in addition to explaining the mechanisms of sex, the ins-and-outs of sexual health, and how to find pleasure — the site also reviews sex toys.

Coming out

Coming out of the closet, or simply coming out, is a metaphor for LGBT people's self-disclosure of their sexual orientation or of their gender identity. The term coming out can also be used in various non-LGBT applications (e.g. atheists).

KIDS PAY THE PRICE: HOW DISCRIMINATORY ADOPTION AND FOSTER CARE LAWS HARM CHILDREN

Across the country, states are passing harmful laws that allow adoption and foster care agencies to make decisions for children in their care based on religious beliefs rather than on the best interests of the child. These laws create a license to discriminate and allow agencies to flatly refuse to consider well-qualified prospective families for child placement—and still receive government funding. Children in state care are hurt by these laws, because qualified foster and adoptive parents could be turned away. These laws also hurt LGBT youth who may be denied care by agencies or be unable to receive affirming, supportive care.
